Cécile Matton: The Jeweler of Scent

Cécile Matton is a renowned French perfumer celebrated for her ability to craft fragrances that are both emotionally resonant and artistically refined. Born in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), she spent her early years immersed in the vivid aromas of Africa—a sensory foundation that would later influence her olfactory creations.

Initially pursuing a career in pharmacy, Matton's passion for scent led her to the prestigious Givaudan Perfumery School in Grasse, France. There, she honed her skills under the mentorship of Jean Guichard, gaining a deep understanding of fragrance composition. Her professional journey took her to New York, where she worked with International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF) before returning to France to join the creative team at MANE in 2007.

Matton's portfolio boasts an array of notable fragrances that showcase her versatility and creativity. Among her celebrated works are:

  • Yves Saint Laurent Baby Doll (1999): A playful and youthful scent that captures the essence of femininity.

  • Viktor & Rolf Bonbon (2014): A gourmand fragrance co-created with Serge Majoullier, known for its caramel notes and elegant bottle design.

  • Emporio Armani Stronger With You (2017): A modern aromatic scent that embodies contemporary masculinity.

    Diptyque Venise (2021): A fragrance that evokes the romantic allure of Venice.

     

    Her creations often feature ingredients like nutmeg, musk, and Orcanox™, reflecting her preference for scents that are both comforting and evocative.

In recognition of her contributions to the fragrance industry, Matton was named "Perfumer of the Year 2018" by Cosmétique Mag. Beyond perfumery, she is also passionate about jewelry making, earning her the moniker "the Jeweler Perfumer." Her dual interests in scent and design underscore her commitment to craftsmanship and artistry.

Matton's approach to perfumery is deeply personal and intuitive. She believes in the power of scent to evoke memories and emotions, often drawing inspiration from her own experiences and surroundings. Her work continues to inspire both industry professionals and fragrance enthusiasts alike.
