I Expected Apricot Vanilla Heaven, but Montale Surprised Me

I Blind Bought Montale Sweet Vanilla and the First Spray Was Not What I Expected

Blind buying a Montale fragrance is always a little dangerous for me.

I do not dislike the brand. Actually, I think Montale has created plenty of memorable perfumes. My problem is usually the intensity.

Many Montale fragrances are incredibly powerful. They project heavily, stay on skin forever, and sometimes feel like they enter the room before you do.

That can be impressive.

It can also be exhausting.

Because of that, I normally prefer samples or smaller bottles when I want to explore the house.

Sweet Vanilla was different.

The combination of vanilla and apricot immediately caught my attention, especially because I had heard descriptions comparing it to warm baked dough covered with apricot jam.

That sounded exactly like the kind of fragrance I would want when the weather starts getting cooler.

So I took the risk and bought it without properly testing it first.

Then, after ordering it, I suddenly remembered something slightly worrying.

I might have smelled Sweet Vanilla before.

And I might not have liked it.

At that point there was nothing left to do except wait for the bottle to arrive.

Why Sweet Vanilla Seemed Like a Safe Montale Blind Buy

Vanilla is probably the main reason I was willing to take the chance.

Montale has several vanilla fragrances that I find much easier to wear than some of the brand's darker or more aggressive creations.

Sweet Vanilla also sounds extremely simple on paper.

Apricot.

Vanilla.

That is essentially the entire idea.

Normally I would be suspicious of such a short composition, but sometimes simplicity is exactly what makes a perfume addictive.

The apricot note made it even more tempting.

I love apricot in fragrance because it can move in several directions. It can smell juicy and bright, soft and velvety, slightly tart, or thick and almost jam like.

Combined with vanilla, I expected something warm, creamy, fruity and extremely gourmand.

My biggest expectation was that baked pastry effect.

I wanted something that smelled almost like sweet dough filled with apricot preserves.

The first spray did not give me that.

At least not immediately.

The First Spray Smelled More Like Orange Than Apricot

I sprayed Sweet Vanilla quite generously.

Maybe too generously considering this is Montale.

My immediate reaction was actually relief.

It was pleasant.

Nothing harsh happened.

Nothing aggressively synthetic jumped from my skin.

I did not instantly regret buying it.

But I was confused.

Instead of apricot, the opening smelled almost orange like to me.

There was a bright citrus quality that I really was not expecting.

For a fragrance built around apricot and vanilla, the beginning felt surprisingly fresh.

It did not smell exactly like squeezing an orange.

It was more of an orange colored feeling.

Bright fruit, citrus sweetness, and vanilla underneath.

Then the apricot started appearing.

The Apricot Becomes Sweeter on Skin

Once Sweet Vanilla had been sitting on my skin for a while, the composition began moving closer to what I originally expected.

The fruit became warmer and softer.

Instead of fresh apricot flesh, I started getting something closer to honeyed apricots.

There is a slightly concentrated sweetness to it, almost as if the fruit has been cooked or warmed.

This is where the vanilla also becomes much easier to notice.

The two work naturally together.

You get sweet fruit first, then a smooth vanilla background that slowly starts turning the fragrance into something more gourmand.

I also get an interesting impression of sun warmed apricot skin.

It has a slightly dry fruity quality instead of being completely syrupy.

That stops Sweet Vanilla from smelling like pure apricot jam.

Then the Baked Dough Effect Appears

The longer Sweet Vanilla stays on skin, the more I understand why people describe it as pastry like.

There is definitely something here that reminds me of sweet baked dough.

Not an elaborate French dessert.

Not a buttery croissant.

More like a simple homemade pastry with vanilla and fruit.

The vanilla becomes softer and warmer while the apricot blends into the sweetness.

At this stage, I stop thinking about citrus almost completely.

What remains is a combination of vanilla, warm fruit and a soft baked accord.

There is no obvious chocolate note, but something about this base reminds me of another Montale fragrance I own.

Montale seems to have a recognizable sweet gourmand DNA that appears in several perfumes.

Once you know it, you start noticing it.

Sweet Vanilla has that familiar Montale sweetness, but in a surprisingly gentle form.

This Is Much Softer Than I Expected From Montale

One of the biggest surprises is the intensity.

I expected Sweet Vanilla to be enormous.

That expectation comes naturally when Montale is written on the bottle.

Instead, this feels relatively controlled.

It is still noticeable, and I would not describe it as a skin scent, but compared with some Montale perfumes, it feels almost polite.

For me, that is a positive.

I can actually wear it without feeling trapped inside a cloud of fragrance.

At the same time, the softer performance creates another question.

Is Sweet Vanilla interesting enough?

My Biggest Problem Is That It Feels Slightly Flat

After the initial changes in the opening, the fragrance becomes quite straightforward.

Sweet apricot.

Vanilla.

Baked sweetness.

And then it mostly stays there.

That is not necessarily bad.

A perfume does not need to transform dramatically every thirty minutes to be enjoyable.

Sometimes you want something uncomplicated.

But I was hoping for a little more texture.

Maybe more creaminess.

Maybe more spice.

Maybe something woody underneath the vanilla.

There is a point where Sweet Vanilla begins to feel slightly monotone on my skin.

It smells pleasant.

I simply do not know yet whether pleasant is enough.

It Has a Surprisingly Nostalgic Quality

There is another side of Sweet Vanilla that I did not expect.

Something about it feels familiar.

It reminds me slightly of sweet body sprays and affordable fruity vanilla fragrances from years ago.

I do not mean that as an insult.

There is something comforting about that familiarity.

It feels easy to understand from the first wear.

You do not need to analyze it.

You smell sweet fruit, vanilla and pastry.

Done.

But that simplicity also makes me think about value.

If I am buying a full bottle, I want to feel some excitement when I smell my wrist.

At the moment, Sweet Vanilla gives me comfort more than excitement.

Sweet Vanilla Could Be Excellent for Layering

This might actually be where the fragrance becomes much more interesting.

Because Sweet Vanilla has such a simple fruity vanilla structure, I can easily imagine using it as a layering perfume.

A dry woody fragrance could give it more depth.

Something spicy could create contrast against the sweet apricot.

A darker amber fragrance could make it feel more appropriate for evening.

Even something smoky might completely change its personality.

Sweet Vanilla provides a soft gourmand foundation without being so complicated that it fights with everything layered over it.

That could make the perfume much more useful than it initially appears.

On its own, I am still uncertain.

As part of a combination, I can already see a lot of possibilities.

When Would I Wear Montale Sweet Vanilla?

This immediately feels like a cooler weather fragrance to me.

I can see myself enjoying it much more in autumn than during the middle of summer.

The warm vanilla, sweet apricot and baked pastry feeling suit sweaters, cooler evenings and comfortable casual clothes.

It does not feel particularly formal.

It also does not feel seductive in an obvious way.

For me, Sweet Vanilla is more about comfort.

I would wear it during a relaxed weekend, while going for coffee, shopping, spending time at home, or on a casual autumn day.

It has an easy sweetness that does not demand a special occasion.

Is Montale Sweet Vanilla Worth Blind Buying?

After one wear, I would be careful.

There is nothing particularly difficult about the fragrance.

If you love vanilla, apricot and uncomplicated gourmand perfumes, there is a good chance you will find it pleasant.

But pleasant and exciting are not the same thing.

The apricot is sweeter and warmer than I expected.

The vanilla is comfortable.

The pastry effect is enjoyable.

And thankfully, the fragrance is much less aggressive than many Montale perfumes I have tried.

Still, I would not call it an instant love.

If you expect an extremely rich apricot dessert with layers of creamy vanilla and buttery pastry, Sweet Vanilla may feel simpler than the descriptions suggest.

Testing it first would still be the safer choice.

My First Impression of Montale Sweet Vanilla

I went into this blind buy expecting either a delicious apricot vanilla obsession or another Montale fragrance that would immediately overwhelm me.

Somehow, I got neither.

Sweet Vanilla sits somewhere in the middle.

The strange orange like opening surprised me.

Then the apricot became sweeter and more recognizable.

Vanilla gradually moved forward, followed by that soft baked dough impression I had been hoping to find.

The result is pleasant, warm, sweet and surprisingly easy to wear.

But I am still waiting for the moment when pleasant becomes addictive.

Maybe that will happen once the weather gets colder.

Maybe I will discover the perfect fragrance to layer with it.

Or maybe Sweet Vanilla will remain exactly what it currently seems to be: a simple, comfortable apricot vanilla that smells good without completely stealing my attention.

For now, I am not disappointed that I bought it.

But I am also not obsessed.

And sometimes the most interesting blind buys are the ones that need a little more time before you understand exactly how you feel about them.
